Overview

Yo, Miss: A Graphic Look at High School takes the reader inside Wildcat Academy, a second chance high school in New York City where all the students are considered at-risk. Through strong and revealing black and white images, Wilde tells the story of "eight students who are trying to get that ticket to the middle class—a high school diploma." Whether they succeed or not has as much to do with what happens outside the classroom as in, and the value of perseverance is matched by the power of a second chance. It is a story that shows these teens in all their beauty, intelligence, suffering, humor, and humanity (and also when they are really pains in the behind.) A view from the trenches of public education, Yo, Miss challenges preconceptions about who these kids are, and what is needed to help them graduate.

I TEACH ATJOHN V. LINDSAY WILDCAT ACADEMY, A PUBLIC CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL IN LOWER MANHATTAN, N.Y.C.

MR. SMITH, YOU'VE FAILED EVERY CLASS FOR THE PAST TWO SEMESTERS. I DON'T THINK THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE FOR YOU. I'D LIKE TO SEND YOUR TRANSCRIPT TO A SCHOOL I KNOW CALLED WILDCAT.

IT'S A SECOND CHANCE SCHOOL. THAT MEANS MANY OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE DROPPED OUT, BEEN KICKED OUT, OR FLUNKED OUT OF OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS

WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DID YOU PREVIOUSLY ATTEND?

LET'S SEE ... MY LAST SCHOOL WAS TRUMAN — KICKED OUT FOR NONATTENDANCE. BEFORE THAT I WAS AT MURRY BERGTRAUM — KICKED OUT FOR FIGHTING. BEFORE THAT ...

WE'RE A SCHOOL FOR STUDENT FOR WHO SCHOOL HASN'T WORKED.

REALITY HASN'T YET COMPLICATED THIS ROUND OF SCHOOL. ON THAT FIRST DAY, THERE IS NOTHING THAT WILL STOP THESE KIDS FROM ACHIEVING THE DREAM OF GRADUATION.

I CAN ALREADY SEE IT ... THEY CALL MY NAME, MY WHOLE FAMILY'S THERE, I WALK UP TO GET MY DIPLOMA ...

I AM GOING TO BE THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL.

GRADUATION MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME.

I HAVE TO DO THIS. THERE'S NO CHOICE.

WE ALL BELIEVE IT ...
