Description: This update from the 2001 edition describes the broad outlines of the transplantation process — from the management of an organ donor to the specifics of the various solid organ transplants.
Purpose: This book strives to introduce a broad audience to the critical issues in solid organ transplantation. A book providing such an overview to people with a basic medical background is valuable to the educational mission of the American Society of Transplantation.
Audience: This primer is written at a level to be informative for readers with basic medical knowledge - whether nurses or medical students or residents — and who have minimal familiarity with the field of transplantation.
Features: It reviews basic concepts of transplant immunology and immunosuppression, as well as specific issues of the individual types of solid organ transplants. Reviewed data are clearly presented in figure form. When appropriate, clinical concepts are illustrated by case studies.
Assessment: This edition appears a decade after the previous edition, and it addresses the changes in immunosuppression and clinical management of transplant patients that have occurred in the interim. One suggestion for future editions is to have a brief discussion of common indications for transplantation in each of the organ sections. For example, in liver transplantation (chapter 10), a broad list of indications for liver transplantation is listed in Table 10.1, but readers do not get the sense that alcoholic and hepatitis C cirrhosis are the major indications for transplant, or that nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is a rising indication.
