Description: This book provides a comprehensive base of knowledge in the overlapping fields of neuroanesthesia and neurointensive care.
Purpose: The editors endeavored to present a framework to provide the basis for meticulous understanding of the field, and the overlapping nature of intraoperative and perioperative neuroanesthesia/neurointensive care. Educationally sound in theory, this type of book has not been available before. The authors have been wonderfully successful in this presentation.
Audience: Anyone with a significant interest in these fields would benefit from this book. This includes anesthesia trainees on their neuroanesthesia rotations as well as anesthesiologists in practice. All those in neurointensive care education and practice are likely to make good use of this book.
Features: Applied anatomy and physiology chapters open the book, followed by chapters on monitoring and imaging which are ripe with information. Long sections on (intraoperative) neuroanesthesia and (perioperative) neurointensive care form the bulk of the book. Included as well are chapters on neurologic disease states (e.g. neuromuscular, spinal cord injury, seizure disorders). Although the illustrations are primarily in black and white, they are crystal clear and well placed.
Assessment: This is a wonderful and much-needed addition to the field. It is easy to read, yet packed full of important information. The authors have set out to produce a clinically complete book, and they have succeeded.
