    Minimum Requirements

    1. What are the minimum requirements to use NOOK for Windows 8?

    Windows 8.1 is the minimum version recommended for use with the NOOK App. If you already have Windows 8.0, Microsoft provides a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 at http://windows.microsoft.com. The NOOK App does not support Windows 8.0 outside the US.

    2. Which countries are supported by NOOK for Windows 8?

    A list of countries currently supported by the NOOK app is displayed when opening the app as a pull-down menu. In order to shop for books, magazines, newspapers and comics, the billing address for the selected payment method must match the country selected at log-in. Some content is only available in the country in which it was purchased and may not continue to be available if you change the country of residence for the app.

    Accounts

    1. Which accounts can I use with NOOK for Windows 8?

    With NOOK for Windows 8, you are able to use either your Microsoft account or your NOOK account to read and shop for books, magazines, newspapers and comics. If you do not have a Microsoft account already, you can create one by opening the NOOK app and then clicking or tapping on "Sign up for a Microsoft account" after you have selected "Continue with your Microsoft account". If you have a Microsoft account, but need password help, visit http://login.live.com. You can also create a NOOK account by providing an email address and password on the Welcome screen in the NOOK for Windows 8 app or by visiting http://nook.com/CreateAccount from your web browser. A NOOK account, with a valid payment method, lets you shop for NOOK books, magazines and newspapers. Signing in with a NOOK account also allows you to synchronise your library on NOOK for Windows 8 with your other NOOK devices and NOOK Reading Applications.     2. Do I need to have a NOOK account in order to use NOOK for Windows 8?

    No. You can use a Microsoft account. However, creating a NOOK account and combining it with a Microsoft account provides the following benefits:

    -View content previously purchased with a NOOK account and content purchased with a Microsoft account in a single, combined Library
    -Manage purchases (such as Newspaper and Magazine subscriptions) made using a Microsoft account
    -Read/access books, comics, magazines, and newspapers on other NOOK devices or NOOK Reading Applications
    -Add /use Barnes & Noble/NOOK gift cards as a payment method

    3. How can I create a NOOK account?

    If you are already signed into NOOK with your Microsoft account, you can create a NOOK account in the NOOK for Windows 8 app by: 1) Swiping right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar 2) On the Charm menu, select "Settings" 3) In the Settings menu, select "Account". Select the option to "Create a NOOK account." You can also create a NOOK account by selecting the "Sign in with a NOOK account" option on the Welcome screen in the NOOK for Windows 8 app, or or by visiting http://nook.com/CreateAccount from your web browser.

    4. How can I combine my Microsoft Account with a NOOK account? What are the benefits of combining my Microsoft account with a NOOK account?

    Creating a NOOK account and combining it with a Microsoft account provides the following benefits: - View content previously purchased with a NOOK account and content purchased with a Microsoft account in a single, combined Library - Manage purchases (such as Newspaper and Magazine subscriptions) made using a Microsoft account on the web using http://www.nook.com - Read/access books, comics, magazines and newspapers on other NOOK devices or NOOK Reading Applications - Add/use Barnes & Noble/NOOK gift cards as a payment method To combine your Microsoft account with a NOOK account: 1) Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar 2) On the Charm menu, select "Settings" 3) In the Settings menu, select "Account" 4) Select the type of NOOK account you want to use. o Select the option to "Create a NOOK account" if you want to combine with a new NOOK account o Select "Already have a NOOK account?" if you want to combine an existing NOOK account If you create a NOOK account from within NOOK for Windows 8 while signed in with your Microsoft account, your new account will be automatically combined with your Microsoft account.

    5. Can I combine more than one Microsoft account or NOOK account with each other?

    You can only combine one NOOK account with a Microsoft account.

    6. Once I have merged my Microsoft and NOOK accounts, can I separate them?

    No. The process of combining a NOOK account with a Microsoft account cannot be reversed.

    7. I have combined my Microsoft and NOOK accounts. What payment method will be used when I purchase an item from the NOOK Shop?

    Your payment method associated with your Microsoft account will be used when purchasing content from the NOOK Shop.

    8. How do I change the payment method used to make purchases from NOOK for Windows 8?

    You can add or update the payment method associated with the account you have used to sign into NOOK for Windows 8. To change or add payment methods for your Microsoft account: 1) Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar 2) On the Charm menu, select "Settings" 3) In the Settings menu, select "Account" 4) Select the option to "Manage your payment method" To change or add payment methods for your NOOK account: 1) Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar 2) On the Charm menu, select "Settings" 3) In the Settings menu, select "Account" 4) Select the option to "Manage payment method" 5) Select the option to "Change Credit Card" Note that in order to shop for books, magazines, newspapers and comics, the billing address for the selected payment method must match the country selected at log-in.     9. How do I change the country in NOOK for Windows 8?

    If you have previously signed in to the NOOK app, you will need to sign out in order to change the country associated with the app. In order to do this: 1) Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar 2) On the Charm menu, select "Settings" 3) In the Settings menu, select "Account" 4) Select the option to "Sign Out" 5) Reopen the app and select the desired country at sign-in. Note that in order to Shop for books, magazines, newspapers and comics, the billing address for the selected payment method must match the country selected at log-in. Some content is only available in the country it was purchased and may not continue to be available if you change the country of residence for the app.

    Shopping

    1. Can I shop for books, magazines, newspapers and comics on NOOK for Windows 8?

    Possible reasons why you may not see the purchases in the NOOK for Windows 8 app are: You are logged in with your Microsoft account. If you log in to the app with your NOOK account, your reads will appear. You can also combine your NOOK account with your Microsoft account, which allows you to have your entire library in one place.

    2. How do I search for a particular book, newspaper, magazine or comic to purchase on Nook for Windows 8?

    - Tap or click on the search bar in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and begin typing the search term, such as an author's name or book or magazine titles.
    - The results for those key words from within your Library and the Shop will be displayed separately on a Search results page.

    Library

    1. I made purchases using NOOK for Windows 8, but I cannot see them on my NOOK device. Why not?

    Possible reasons why you may not see the purchases on your NOOK device are: You have not merged your Microsoft account with your NOOK account. Combining a NOOK account with a Microsoft account provides the following benefits: - View content previously purchased with a NOOK account and content purchased with a Microsoft account in a single, combined Library - Manage purchases (such as Newspaper and Magazine subscriptions) made using a Microsoft account - Read/Access Books, Comics, Magazines and Newspapers on other NOOK devices or NOOK Reading Applications If you have already merged your NOOK and Microsoft accounts but still cannot see your recent purchases, try to re-sync your library. To sync your library, swipe up to reveal the Reading Tools menu. From the Reading Tools menu, tap or click on the "Sync" icon.

    2. I made purchases on my NOOK device, but I cannot see them in the NOOK for Windows 8 app. Why not?

    Possible reasons why you may not see the purchases in the NOOK for Windows 8 app are: You are logged in with your Microsoft account. If you log in to the app with your NOOK account, your reads will appear. You can also combine your NOOK account with your Microsoft account, which allows you to have your entire library in one place.

    3. I'm having trouble downloading my books on NOOK for Windows 8. What do I do?

    Possible reasons why you may not be able to download books: The payment method on your Microsoft account may have expired OR a default payment method may not have been selected. To update your payment information or set up a default payment method: If you are using a Microsoft account, go to http://account.live.com and select the "Billing" option or take the following steps within the app: 1) Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar 2) On the Charm menu, select "Settings" 3) In the Settings menu, select "Account" 4) Select the option to "Manage your payment method" To change or add payment methods for your NOOK account: 1) Swipe right to left on your screen to bring up the Charm Bar 2) On the Charm menu, select "Settings" 3) In the Settings menu, select "Account" 4) Select the option to "Manage payment method" 5) Select the option to "Change Credit Card" After you have updated your payment information, try downloading your books again. If you have changed your Country of Residence, it may not be possible to download some content if the billing address for your payment method does not match the country in which the content was purchased. If you are still having issues, please archive and then unarchive the book, and try downloading your book again. If you are still having issues, please sign out of the NOOK app and then sign back in.

    4. Can I view my magazines, newspapers or comics on NOOK for Windows 8?

    Yes, you can view your NOOK magazines, newspapers and comics on NOOK for Windows 8. Some magazine titles are not compatible with NOOK for Windows 8. Such titles cannot be opened by NOOK for Windows 8 and will not appear in Shop or Library. If you own one of these titles, you can still access it using a NOOK device or another NOOK Reading Application.

    5. Why don't new issues of my newspapers or magazines show up in my Library?

    There may have been a loss of network connectivity during the scheduled time for delivery. Please check the network or Wi-Fi settings on your computer or tablet to make sure you are connected to the Internet. Next, from the Library screen, swipe up to reveal the Reading Tools menu and select "Sync". If you leave your device on or in sleep mode overnight, and it is connected to Wi-Fi, it will sync automatically and download the latest issues of publications to your Library. If new content is not visible after you have confirmed that network connectivity is available and have performed a sync, try to sign out of the app and then sign back in. Some content purchased for other NOOK devices or Reading apps is not supported by NOOK for Windows 8. Items that are not supported are displayed in the "Unsupported" section in your Library.

    6. My library is getting crowded. How can I archive items from my library?

    NOOK for Windows 8 easily lets you archive books, magazines, newspapers and comics from your library. From the Library screen just touch and hold on a cover and drag it in a downward motion (a tick will appear for the item you selected). This will reveal options such as full version available (for samples), view details, download, archive, or sync. Tap or click on "Archive" to archive the book. Please note: Archiving an item will remove the file from your device and move the item into the Archive folder in your NOOK Library in the NOOK Cloud. You can unarchive the item if you want to re-download it to your device.

    7. Can I Import PDF or ePub files in the NOOK for Windows 8 app?

    Yes. To Import (or side-load) PDF or ePub files: - Swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen and select "Import", or swipe right to the "More" section in "My Library" and select "Import". This will display a file menu you can navigate in order to find the file to Import into your Library. - Tap or click on the file to select it - Tap or click on the "Import" button to add it to your NOOK Library. - You can view and open Imported files from the "My Files" section of your NOOK Library

    8. Why can't I Import some of my ePub or PDF files?

    The NOOK app supports the Import or ePub and PDF files into your Library from "My PC" and SkyDrive. However, it does not support opening or importing files that have DRM security or encryption associated with them.

    9. Can I open textbooks on NOOK for Windows 8?

    Textbooks are currently not supported in the NOOK for Windows 8 app.

    10. Can I read interactive NOOK Kid's books on NOOK for Windows 8?

    At this time, only NOOK Kid's chapter books are supported.

    Navigation

    1. How do I quickly access the book I'm reading now?

    The fastest way to quickly access what you are reading now is through the "My Library" section. My Library displays content you have most recently read or purchased from any NOOK device or NOOK Reading App. Items are sorted by most recently added, rather than by publication date. You can sort the items in Library by Title and for books also by Author. You can also choose to show all Library items at one time, or view just one type of content at a time, such as books, magazines etc. Another way to locate the item you're reading now is to bring up the Reading Tools menu. Access the Reading Tools menu by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or swiping down from the top of the screen. Tap or click on the cover to return to the item you are currently reading.

    2. How do I get back to My Library when reading a book, magazine, newspaper or comic?

    To return to your library when reading a book, magazine, newspaper or comic, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the Reading Tools menu (the Reading tools menu can also be accessed by swiping down from the top of your screen). Tap or click on the Library icon to get back to your Library.

    3. How do I search for a particular book, newspaper, magazine or comic on Nook for Windows 8?

    - Tap or click on the search bar in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and begin typing the search term, such as an author's name or book or magazine titles.
    - The results for those key words from within your Library and the Shop will be displayed separately on a Search results page.

    4. How do I pin what I am reading to my Windows Start screen?

    To pin content from your Library to the Windows Start screen, open up a book, newspaper, magazine or comic. Once open, swipe up to reveal the Reading Tools menu. From the Reading Tools menu, tap or click on the "Pin" icon. You will then be able to give a unique name to the item you wish to pin to the Windows Start menu. Tap or click on "Pin to Start" to add it to your Windows Start screen.

    Reading Tools

    1. How do I look up words in the dictionary while reading a book?

    To find the definition of a word while reading, tap or click on the word on screen and select "Look up" from the menu. A scrollable window will be displayed, allowing you to view the definition of the word you selected from the currently installed Dictionary. You can also type in a different word from that screen to look up another word.

    2. How do I highlight text while reading a book?

    To highlight text in the NOOK app - Tap or click on the spot on the screen where you want to begin highlighting - Drag the circles displayed on screen to the beginning and the end of the text you'd like to highlight - Finally, tap or click on "Add Highlight"

    3. How do I change the color of the highlight I've added to text in a book?

    To change the color of the highlight you've added - Tap or click on the highlighted text - Next, tap or click on "Change Color" - Tap or click on one of the other colors displayed. .

    4. How do I remove a highlight I've added to a book?

    To remove a highlight: - Tap or click on the highlighted text - Next, tap or click on "Delete"

    5. How do I change which text I've highlighted in a book?

    To change the text you have highlighted, delete the highlight and then repeat the process with the text you prefer.

    6. How do I add a note (or annotation) about the book I'm reading?

    To add a note (or annotation) in the NOOK for Windows 8 app: - Tap or click on the location where you want your note to be referenced - Next, tap or click on "Add Note" - A text field will appear on the screen - Tap the text field and begin typing your note. - Next, select "Save" - A small page icon will appear in the margin of the book on screen indicating there is a note associated with the text and the text you selected on screen will appear highlighted.

    7. How do I view all my notes in a particular book I'm reading?

    To view all of the annotations associated with one book: - Swipe up from the bottom anywhere within the reader and select "Annotations" - You can navigate to the annotation's location in the book by selecting the item in the Annotation window

    8. How do I remove or edit I note I've added?

    Tap the highlighted text at the note location and select any item in that menu including:
    - View Note
    - Edit Note
    - Remove Note
    - Change Color
    - Delete

    9. How do I find a word or phrase in a book?

    To find a word or phrase in a book using the NOOK for Windows 8 app:
    - Swipe up from the bottom of the screen
    - Select "Find" from the app menu
    - Type in the word or phrase of interest
    - Select "Enter"
    - If a word is found that matches the search term, it will appear highlighted on the screen
    - To find the next or previous instance of that word or phrase, select Next or Previous from the look-up menu at the bottom of the screen

    Miscellaneous

    1. How do I pin the NOOK app to my Windows Start screen?

    Unlike Windows 8.0, apps downloaded from the Windows Store are not automatically pinned to the Windows Start screen in Windows 8.1. To pin the NOOK App to the Windows Start screen: - Open the Windows Start Screen - Swipe down or use a mouse to tap the down arrow to view all Apps - Tap and hold or right-click on the NOOK app - Select "Pin to Start"

    2. How do I change the size of the Live Tile for the NOOK app or reading content pinned to my Windows Start screen?

    With Windows 8.1, the NOOK app supports four Windows Live tile sizes, including Small, Medium, Wide and Large. To change the size of the Live Tile for the pinned NOOK app or reading content: - Open the Windows Start Screen - Tap and hold or right-click on the Live Tile for the NOOK app or the reading content you wish to resize - Select "Resize" - Select your preferred Live Tile size

    3. NOOK for Windows 8 won't install on my computer or tablet. What can I do?

    NOOK for Windows 8 can only be installed on computers and tablets with Windows 8 or Windows RT installed. The NOOK App does not support Windows 8.0 outside the USA. If you already have Windows 8.0, Microsoft provides a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 at http://windows.microsoft.com.

    4. How do I cancel my magazine or newspaper subscriptions?

    To manage your magazine or newspaper subscriptions from within the NOOK app: - Open the magazine or newspaper from your Library - Swipe from the bottom of the screen to bring up the app menu - Tap or click on the View Details button - The Product Details page will be displayed. Tap or click on the "manage subscriptions" link - Select and confirm the appropriate options.

    5. I'm still having issues using the app. Who can I contact for help?
